How to hide your fic behind a cut

A few people have contacted me to ask about this, so I thought I'd do a brief tutorial for their benefit and any lurkers or other people who might not know. The guide itself is underneath a cut, so that's some sort of... thing.

First, I'm going to demonstrate how to make a cut for people posting their fic in HTML mode, which is how I personally use dreamwidth. Rich text will follow.

This is a plain default cut tag on my friends page:

HTML posting mode

This particular cut is formed fairly simply. In the posting box, you just type the following:

<cut>Put whatever you want to be hidden by the cut here.</cut>

The first 'cut' tag is an instruction to the website that whatever follows is to be obscured, the second an instruction that the stuff to be obscured is over and done with. To get more fancy you can lengthen the instructions a little. Below is an example:

On people's friendslists, this would look like:

'whatever goes outside the tags won't be hidden.

( This stuff between the quotation marks is what the cut will say on people's friends pages or the default view of your journal )

whatever goes outside the tags won't be hidden.'

Rich Text mode

Some of you post using rich text mode. This is even simpler. Highlight the stuff you want to go under the cut and find the cut button amongst the options, like so:

Then, type into the box that pops up what you want the cut tag to say:

All done!

Hope that helps!
