2013 Kurofai Winter Olympics - theme and scheduling poll!

It is 2013, and so time to start seriously thinking of the 2013 Kurofai Winter Olympics!

Thanks to the suggestions of everyone on our early poll, we have several very strong competitors for this year's theme.

Feudal vs Future - also known as Science vs Magic, or Sci-fi vs. Fantasy. Explores two different flavors of speculative fiction settings for the price of one!

Drama vs Comedy - also known as SRS vs LOL. On one side a perfectly straight-faced, serious-business interpretation of a prompt, with all the grim consequences and earnest drama thereof. On the other side... laughs abound.

Let us know your preference, and while you're at it: if you plan to write for the 2013 olympics, let us know what weeks you would be available to write. We'd like to accommodate everybody's schedule as much as possible!

I'd be on team Future for option#1, and Standby for option#2 (I'm not very good at on-demand comedy).

First week of Feb I will be busy because OMG ANIME CONVENTION IN MY HOME STATE, but considering I write mostly at night/on weekends, it wouldn't make a difference to me otherwise :D

If it's option #1 I am super-easy; I can do both, and similarly both for option #2, I am also fairly confident in doing either, but with a preference for drama because I don't know if I'm actually funny or if I just think I'm funny.

I'd like to be on Team Fantasy for Option #1, and… idk, really, probably Team Drama for Option #2.

What's all this I see about understudy/on demand? I've never done anything like this before.

Neither have I, I just read the last ones. I remember something along the lines the Understudy filled in if someone couldn't make a prompt for the Olympics prompt.

It means if someone can't post on their designated day, the understudy pinch-hits a fic to take their place. It's a very stressful job! Usually we have 1/2 last-minute drop-outs, so the understudy can save the day for the whole team. I believe Zel saved Team AU last time by posting a whole replacement fic on less than 24 hours' notice (a team is penalized if someone fails to post their fic on the day they're supposed to).

Also it's a good position if you are unsure which team/prompt you want to sign up for. In the past (I believe in 2011), there was an understudy for each team. So if there's a lot you see that you feel you can work, but don't know which one to pick, AND can fill in with more time crunch, understudy is the role!

...Mikkeneko would say this a lot to me, but now I know how important the role is, considering I filled in more than one participant who had to bow out. XDDD

Option #1 I'd prefer Team Future but I could do Fantasy too if needed. Option #2, pretty much same thing, prefer Drama but can do Comedy (I'm with reikah on this one, comedy on demand is hard ^_^;;).

riiiight? I can do comedy, it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye, but being funny on purpose IS hard. Plus, even my humour fics have traces of angst and gloom. It's like I'm destined to fail. :(

If the first option I'd be okay with either.... But I'm leaning more towards Team Future - though I'm not sure what that really encompasses. /shrugs/
I could probably understudy either for the second option.
Hopefully work doesn't weigh me down to much!

... if you say you're not sure what team future encompasses, does it mean that you don't have much experience on the SciFi genre?

For option #1... neither one is really grabbing me until I see the actual prompts. I'd probably be okay with the filling in whichever team is lacking and you can just shove me into an empty slot.

For option #2... I'd sign up for Comedy because I know it's more likely to need volunteers. XD

I am unsure about this year's Olympics. I am kind of hot and cold as it is and don't know if it would be a better idea to step aside for someone more certain than I am. I have been wanting to stuff a rocket launcher up my muse's ass for a while, though; maybe a deadline will do it? I think I need a few nights to sleep on this.

P.S. I love the fantasy/future idea so much.

#1: Team Fantasy. I really, really, really want to do fantasy. A dozen or so fantasy plotbunnies attacked me while I was frying eggs.

#2: Team Comedy. Either way, if I attempt to do comedy it will turn into drama, if I attempt drama it will turn into comedy. I just like the idea of starting off with a crack idea and somehow ending that dramatically... which still would be pretty funny.

To be honest, I've always been intrigued by how you guys cope with the KuroFai Olympics. I'd love to join as a writer, but how does one go about the whole process and such? (O.O)

To join as a writer, one simply has to comment on the post (when we make it; this post isn't it) calling for volunteers. It's really quite simple! :) But only make that commitment if you feel like you can carry through, because teams will be penalized score-wise if one of the authors can't make it.

After we make the signup post and we think that everyone who is going to volunteer has done so, we try to divide people into teams based on their stated preference. Once the teams are established, we give out the list of prompts and let team members discuss among themselves (via a dedicated comment thread) who will take which prompt.

Then it's just a matter of writing your story, and posting it on the appointed day.

I think I am going to have to bow out of this Olympics. ;A; It's right in the middle of my insanely busy time at work and a family vacation so I'll have no time to write. Looking forward to reading everyone's submissions though, and cheers to Reikah and Mikke for planning and organizing! <3
