Summary:

Perhaps I could've been kinder to myself and read this NOT after a very very long doubleshift of a day...but I feel like being so exhausted I was drifting off at the end of chapter 18 and HAD to pause lent me a sense of camraderie with the characters in the same boat of soul deep exhaustion, haha. I'm going to leave you a comment on AO3 properly too, but I just wanted to make sure you had my vote ASAP. Fantastic work, thank you for riding that train all the way to the end of your 68k premise! It was fun to read!

Fai was self sacrificial and secretive, Kurogane was ride or die in just a few days despite his misgivings, they fall in love. Basically just like canon lol.

Kurogane is assigned as Fai's bodyguard and guards him with his body literally in one scene, so I can't see how it'd be handled any better.

Kurogane as a space pilot was 👌👌👌👌, also props for an accurate depiction of being exposed to the vacuum of space.

Kurogane-centric fics are my jam, so a multichapter space opera about how he gets a superspy boyfriend while getting roughed up a bit is like, my entire sandwich. The exploration of his PTSD is just the icing on the cake, or the cheese on the sandwich in this case lol.

Oh my god what an amazing ride of a fic. I have so many questions; is VI Fai an actual VI or did Fai manage something like Yuuko did at his time of death ?(because he was totally not a computer but completely human-like) and I would totally love a list of the background characters cause I could not figure out who spider was! Back to the fic, truly wonderful pacing and story telling. You built a believable and detailed world and premise. I would LOVE to read an epilogue or any continuation.

Basically Kurogane was closer than it seemed when he called AI Fai "Fai 2.0." The AI is a near-perfect recreation of original Fai, constructed using a lot of Yuuko's old research on personality matrices before she left the program, and maybe some hacked data from R!Fai's participation in the program. They used to try to give Y!Fai access to research materials as rewards for good behavior when nothing else worked.

AI Fai (or as my beta and I cheekily called him, FAI) doesn't have any of R!Fai's memories, but it's possible that if you're of a mystical mind, some fragment of r!Fai's soul might linger there. ;)

Spider was Jorogumo! I let all of the Palace-connected characters be from XXXholic.

Cap-guy was Kyle, of course. I wanted the pirates to fall into Fei Wang's ranks, but there weren't enough named characters to make it. So I added Alcyone from Rayearth because at least she's sort of an un-redeemed bad-guy.

The GSU crew included a somewhat random assortment of characters. The woman with good aim who managed to clip Kurogane was Oruha! Tech kid complaining about police reports was Ran/C.

And the poor Fall-guy for Genex is none other than Sanyun!

Thanks for clarifying. I feel even worse for the current fai and totally understand why he was so upset that someone hacked into what he has left of his brother. It also makes me wonder why the Vi is going with y!fai calling himself Fai when I think he almost called him by his name on time but was cut off.
I read the epilogue and it's just as great as the story. Those guys really deserve a happy ending someday!

Yeah, he was pretty panicked at the time.

AI Fai definitely would rather call Y!Fai Yuui, but... mission parameters, as well as a good deal of stuff that'd be addressed in the sequel if I ever get around to it.

Kurogane is somehow easier to understand the older I get. I used to feel a lot closer to Fai, but... turns out "tired of this shit and stuck doing the same things I've always done without knowing why" is super relatable XD
