I glad to hear the motif was something you enjoyed, since I tend to go for motifs in my writing. I think it's kind of genius that CLAMP made a lot of dark scenes in the...dark. The moon as a symbolism was something I picked up too throughout the series.
Although I intended to have Kurogane be purely afraid of the dark as a child - a common childhood fear - it becomes complicated as he's an adult and a warrior in my head. I figured him being the watchful type of guy and being trained as a ninja who wakes up easily at any movement wouldn't help with his problems with insomnia.
