Harlequin Prompt #45 - Prologue & Part 1

Title: Let The Water Lead Us Home (1/?)
Rating: PG for now; eventual Mature rating
Notices/Warnings: Genderbender of het variety, hurt/comfort, angst
Summary: (Modified from original Harlequin summary)
By day Kurogane Steele fights crime—by night he fights the haunting memories of his army days. Until his brooding is interrupted by a beauty sleeping on his couch! Fai Flotilda wants to sell her late father's house and expel the last reminder of her past. But first she has to persuade sexy tenant Kurogane to move out... Then a baby is left on his doorstep. Kurogane and Fai might never have known what family is, but this baby needs one—so they'll need to learn fast!
Author's Notes: Genderswap gurl as always, I am pulling off a het!KuroFai where Fai is female and Kurogane is male. It's my first time doing it this way, but I'm confident I will keep their dynamics intact, regardless of their gender makeup. At first I was hoping to write cheesiness galore ala Harlequin, but alas I plot out a lot of drama, angst, and hurt/comfort along with family fluff. I am very far from finished working on this, as it will be another long fic on my plate.
Disclaimer: If you actually read the excerpt for the story this is based on "The Sheriff's Doorstep Baby" you'd see that I adapted the house scene from the excerpt. I didn't know others would be super liberal in their interpretation of the prompt/excerpt, but the rest of the fic would be full of my own ideas. Also, Kurogane's last name was not in fact influenced by that god-forsaken "50 Shades of Grey". It was from his name, which in canon means - "black steel".

( All things come to an end, like a river that ends into the ocean. But sometimes, the tides of the currents and the sweeping motion of rain leads you back, mercilessly, forcefully, and there is no going back. )
