Hey KuroFai fans - it looks like we've got a Mod Team! Please give a big warm hand (and maybe even an eye) for our fantastic volunteer mods for this year's KuroFai Olympics!

Moderators:

[personal profile] evig_sang
[personal profile] mikkeneko
[personal profile] animangod

Assistant Moderators:

[personal profile] peaceful_fury
[personal profile] pokechan

Mods, if you would be so kind to respond to the below Mod Thread confirming your participation, who'd like to do what in the team and maybe chat amongst yourselves to organise how to decide on prompts and what exact dates we should hold the event this year, that would be fantastic. If yours truly might make a humble suggestion for event dates, I recommend at least six weeks of writing time, and a posting week in late August.

And we don't just have Mods - we've got a list of themes, too! For the sake of simplicity, I've skipped the ones that were very similar to another suggested theme, but we have a grand total of eight suggestions!

Themes:
  1. Fire vs. Ice
  2. Earth vs. Sky
  3. Sky vs. Sea
  4. Day vs. Night
  5. Gods vs. Machines
  6. Past vs. Future
  7. Tragedy vs. Comedy
  8. Hope Vs. Despair

To make it easier on the mods this year, it would be fantastic if you could pick your favourite of the themes listed between now and Wednesday the 20th of June

In the case of a tie, we'll have a secondary vote-off between the tied themes later, but for now, cast your votes in the Voting Thread below. To make it fair, you only get one vote, you need a dreamwidth account to vote, and you must vote in the thread for it to count. Mods, you can vote too - we want everyone to help us choose.

I'll put up a post on tumblr advertising the vote, so if you could signal boost there, that would be fantastic. We want as many fans as possible to participate in the vote - let's make democracy work, people, and make this year's event the greatest yet!

(Psst - this will be the last you'll hear from me as an organiser - I'm handing the reins over to our hard-working mods, so please give them all the support they need.)

Hey, KuroFai Fans - We want YOU to moderate the
2018 KuroFai Olympics!

Come one, come all, don't be shy - newcomers and veterans alike are welcome to sign up as members of the mod team for this year's KuroFai Olympics. I'm looking for a team of hopefully four, but three or two would work just fine. All you need is a willing spirit, some time to commit, and of course, an intense love for Kurogane and Fai!

Late August looks like it would be the best time of year in both hemispheres to hold the event itself, and if we can get organised before the end of June, that would give our Olympians all of July and the first half of August to write, with the posting week in the last half of August.

All we need is the mods, a theme, and our teams!

So. If you are interested in being a moderator for the 2018 KuroFai Olympics, please respond to the Mod Sign-Up Thread in the comments below. And if you have an idea for a two-fold, mirrored theme for two teams to battle it out in, please respond to the Theme Suggestion Thread with up to three (3) of your best ideas or personal favourite themes, which our mod team will compile into a list for voting later.

A note on theme suggestions: themes for the Olympics work best when they're simple concepts that have two opposing 'sides' that still relate to each other: Sci Fi vs. Fantasy, Angst vs. Fluff, Canon vs. AU, Dragon vs. Phoenix, Light vs. Dark, Sun vs. Moon, Fire vs. Ice, etc. Prompts can be more complex, and allow for more creativity, but it's important to keep the overall theme simple and easy to understand. (Not to mention, family friendly - nothing suggestive, sexual or gory please!)

I'm going to be making a post promoting the sign-ups on tumblr - please reblog it to spread the word!

Ladies, gents and esteemed enbies, there's been a little chatter about this year's (potential) Olympics on tumblr, and so as your friendly mod, I thought I'd put up a expression of interest post.

As of this moment, there are no dates or anything, no theme, and no one to mod it - but you are more than welcome to chime in with suggestions for any of the above.

Please keep in mind we're an international community, and that we should try to come up with a calendar that accommodates everyone if any potential times are proposed.

For now, this is just a 'please indicate if you'd be interested in joining in' post, and hopefully we can get the ball rolling on a discussion. The Olympics are a lot of work to organise, but they're a lot of fun, and it would be fantastic to keep the contest running well into a decade of fandom tradition!

Welcome, everyone, to the 2017 Kurofai Olympics.
**Note: Author sign-ups are now closed**

Yes! It is officially on, as the last few posts may have indicated. Following in the tradition of Olympics past: the 2012 Canon vs AU Olympics, 2013 Fantasy vs Future Olympics, 2014 Comedy vs Drama Olympics, 2015 Fantasy vs Sci-Fi Olympics, and 2016 Light vs Dark Olympics. This year's theme is something new, so make way for the 2017 Kurofai Olympics: Phoenix vs. Dragon.

What?
But what does that mean? I hear you cry. Well, of course, the Dragon is Kurogane himself, and the Phoenix is Fai. "But surely you aren't going to pit them against each other?" No, no, certainly not; but each team this year will pick either the phoenix or the dragon to give their most careful focus. This year, the teams will concentrate on different POVs for the different characters, each determined by their specific prompt (to be revealed on the prompt claim day, of course.)

Who?
We have a team of mods to run this thing on rails, so the next thing we need to make this dream a reality is you, authors! Sign-ups are now open in this post, and will remain open until we get 14 authors (7 for each team) or until Friday July 14th, whichever comes first. (We always need pinch-hitters, of course -- those aren't part of the 7 for each team!)

In your sign-up, indicate whether you would like to be a first-line or backup author, and which team you'd like to write for. If you're flexible, simply say that, and we will sort everyone out in the end.

When?
The prompt claim post will go up on Friday, July 14th. Authors will then have two weeks to write their fics, with the help of coaches and the encouragement of the audience. Posting will begin in the first week of August (first posting date Saturday, August 5th) and run for one week, followed by a week for the audience to read and vote.

That's all we have to say for now; authors, if you're interested in writing or pinch-hitting this year, get in the comments and sign up!

Guys, gals and nonbinary pals, please put your hands together for the 2017 KuroFai Olympics Moderator Team:

[personal profile] flowerspeaks , [personal profile] animangod , [personal profile] blue_phoenix_tears , [personal profile] aquarius_galuxy , and [personal profile] mikkeneko !

Now, these lovely folks have volunteered to be our team of friendly moderators and get this fantastic fic event off and running. I'm going to sign off and leave you all in the capable hands of our brave mods here, so please direct any enquiries towards them - either by leaving a comment on this post with your question, or sending them a message - and I am sure they'll get back to you as soon as possible!

Just please keep in mind it may take a little while for our mods to get themselves organised; they need time to plan before the event can get started, and I'm sure we all know that patience is a virtue.

Mods, if you would be so kind to do a quick little intro about yourselves in the comments down below, I'm sure that would be really appreciated!

Thanks everyone who volunteered, and thank you all for being so excited about the 2017 KuroFai Olympics!

You're not dreaming, folks: we're looking to bring back that fandom institution, that fantastical fanfic extravaganza, that fabulous festival that is the KuroFai Olympics back for the seventh year running!

But Clover, I can hear you asking, what exactly are the KuroFai Olympics?

That's a great question! The KuroFai Olympics are a friendly, fan-run fanfiction writing event, where two teams working with paired-but-mirrored themes compete to create fanfiction entries based on a series of prompts. The Olympians for each team write frantically over the course of several weeks to finish their entry for their respectively assigned prompts, and then the teams post according to a roster during the much-anticipated posting week... and then comes the voting! Fans vote for their favourite entries in accordance to a scoring rubric, and at the end of the voting period, the scores are tallied up to name a winner!

Clover, that really sounds more like a writing contest than the Olympics. Don't the Olympics have, like, sports and naked oil wrestling or something?

You have a point - it is a contest in a sense, but the name comes from the concept of the Fandom Olympics, which it was inspired by way back when the very first KuroFai-specific Olympics was held on livejournal. And even though it's technically a contest between teams, there are no winners or losers or medals - just a little friendly competition, and a whole lot of amazing fic to read! Besides, no-one's saying you can't strip Kurogane and Fai, cover them in oil and make them wrestle in your fic - just as long as it fits the theme!

...Thank you for that stunning mental image.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but you're welcome! [wink]

Still, naked oil wrestling or not, it sounds like a lot of fun! When's it being held? Who's running it? What's the theme for the teams, and where's the prompt list? When do we start writing, and when do we vote?

Whoa, whoa, whoa! That's a lot of questions that we don't have the answers to yet... and that's what this post is for.

This is an Expression of Interest: we're looking for volunteers to be the contest moderators (the hardworking peeps that run the show), ideas for themes for the teams to compete in (such as Fantasy vs. Sci Fi, Angst vs. Fluff, Canon vs. AU and so on), and suggestions for what dates we should hold the event on (remembering that we need it to be fair for as many people as possible, and accommodate an international calendar - we've got fans all over the world who'd like to join in the fun!).

If you can supply any of the above, we want to hear from you! I've put together three separate threads for volunteers, themes, and dates respectively down below,  as well as a miscellaneous suggestion thread, so if you can, please drop a comment to the appropriate thread with your suggestions!

Hey Clover, didn't you run the event one year? Why can't you just run it again?

You're absolutely right, I sure did - back in 2015. And I don't think I can do it again: I'm a lover writer, not a event-runner, and while I had a blast doing it, it played merry hell with my anxiety. Because of that, it's probably best I stick to doing what I do best: writing about the scowly ninja and his mage husband, and leaving the hard work to other people. Basically, I'm anxious and also lazy, and I wanna write for this year's Olympics - which is a lot harder to do when you're running the whole thing behind the scenes.

That said, I am more than happy to help out to the brave souls that step up to the plate and take their places as event moderators - and as an admin for the comm, I'll lend as much behind-the-scenes help as I possibly can. Now, since I a) work full-time, and b) live in The Land Down Under (aka Australia, aka really bloody far away) it might take me a little bit to get back to you, but please don't hesitate to chat amongst yourselves. I'll chip in when I can to help you out, and I have faith everyone will be polite and friendly to one another! (Because if you're not, then I'll feed you to Mokona [cheerful grin])

SO! Please check out the threads below, and reply to any where you think you have an idea or a suggestion - to make this year's event a successful one, we need all the input we can get!

Thanks, Clover! This sounds really exciting - I can't wait to get involved!

Me too, friend, me too! [finger guns]

EDIT: So far, we have the wonderful [personal profile] animangod , [personal profile] flowerspeaks  and [personal profile] aquarius_galuxy  as part of our moderating team - hopefully we can finalise our whole team soon! I'll update the post again once everyone is confirmed!

Hello to one and all, and welcome to

THE 2016 KUROFAI OLYMPICS

We hope to have another wonderful Olympics season, with all the accompanying surprises, laughter and tears, and desperate midnight snack runs.

If you have not participated in the KuroFai Olympics before, then thank you for joining us! We are glad you're here and excited for the new ideas you can bring to this well-loved event.

If you have joined us before, feel free to skip the first paragraph.

What is it?

The KuroFai Olympics started in 2011 and happen every spring or summer (usually between April and August). Fanfiction writers sign up onto one of two teams, are given a prompt to get them started, and then duke it out with the member of the other team who was given the same prompt. Anyone in the fandom who did not participate as a writer is welcome to read the fics, fill out the scoresheet, and leave comments. Once scores are in, we announce a winning writer and a winning team!

This event is for veterans and newcomers alike, and is HELLA fun, so don't be shy.

If I'm writing, and you're writing, then who is flying the plane?!

Zelinxia & Faren are your friendly coordinators and moderators this year. We are here to provide encouragement and keep things organized. We are both available for all your questions, whenever you need us! You can reach us here at DW by private message, or also by Tumblr message (Xia's Tumblr page is here, Faren's Tumblr page is here.)

What's new in 2016?

This year, we are introducing the idea of dedicated team coaches, and we are definitely looking for a few qualified people to fill this role!

A dedicated coach would be assigned to about 3 writers, and would be available to act as a beta for them. We would want someone who is available to provide encouragement, suggest tweaks, and do proof-reading for one draft from each of their writers. You would be in regular contact with the moderators about how your writers are doing, so we can jump in to help when needed.  Whether it's scheduling conflicts, help with a fic draft, etc, your friendly mods are always there. Just like State Farm Insurance.

If you are interested in signing up to be a coach, then please wait for our sign-up post, which will have a little more info about the role and its expectations!

When are we starting?

The sign-up post will be this very weekend! Yes, it's already nearly July, and yes, we are just as shocked about that as you are!  2016, you have betrayed us!  You skipped a month, didn’t you 2016?  You can’t fool us!

*ahem*

There will be a full schedule available in the sign-up post.

Okay, got it, but WHAT IS THIS YEAR'S THEME ALREADY?

Yeah, yeah, the moment you've all been waiting for. This year will be: DARK VS LIGHT

It's not the Fluff vs. Angst Olympics! Dark can be humour, and Light can be tragic. It very much depends on how you want to spin it. You can make Dark angsty if that’s what you’re interested in, but we will also welcome some outside-the-box thinking. Demons and angels, moon gods and sun gods, vampires and fairies, space pirates and space police, con men and FBI agents... you probably get it by now. Your options are as limitless as your imagination.

Wait, I still have questions???

Ha ha, too bad!

No, just kidding. Please comment on this post. Keep in mind that there will be information about coaching, scheduling, and prompt claiming in the sign-up post that's coming in a couple of days.

If it's a private question, feel free to send a private message to Faren or Zelinxia.

It's the most wonderful time of the year, dear CLAMPers: the 2015 KuroFai Olympics!

Hosted for the first time by yours truly (oh dear god what am I even doing), and proudly brought to you my terrible life choices, we welcome you to the annual KuroFai team-based fic contest here on dreamwidth! Over the next month and a bit, we'll all share the pleasure, the pain, the hair-tearing stress of writing and the nigh-orgasmic relief of finally finishing the damn thing and posting it up.

Following in the footsteps of the 2014 Comedy v.s. Drama, the 2013 Fantasy v.s. Future, the 2012 Canon v.s. AU, and the 2011 Fluff v.s. Angst Olympics, I'm proud to announce that this year's theme is Fantasy v.s. Sci Fi!

But cloverfield, I hear you ask, isn't that just the same as the 2013 comp?

To which I say shhhh *drags hand down your face* quiet now; don't make me poke out an eye. Seriously though, it's a classic theme, and considering all the new blood in the fandom, I've no doubt we can make something fantastic of it. And I'm working really hard on making some interesting prompts to make it very different from our very successful 2013 comp!

The official sign-up and rules post will be going up on Friday the 1st of May, or very close to it, seeing as your cheerful mod is located in the southern hemisphere and lives a few hours in the future from most of you. However, the comp itself will be run on Pacific Standard Time, which [personal profile] reikah assures me is Los Angeles local time. If you're confused, google 'local time in Los Angeles' and compare it to your own timezone to see what your difference is.

But if the sign-up post is on Friday, I hear you asking, as in true CLAMP fashion you clearly don't value the safety of both your eyes, why are you posting about it now?

Well! I'm posting now because we've quite the influx of new fans lately, following the 10th anniversary of TRC and the release of the sequel, not to mention various affiliated CLAMP works which have new blood flowing into other areas of the CLAMPdom, and there's no doubt a few unfortunate souls out there that don't know the joy/terror of the KuroFai Olympics... which makes it your job, my dear KuroFai fanatics, to dust off your best door-knocking outfits and spread the word!

So please, reblog this post on tumblr, use the '2015 KuroFai Olympics' tag on your posts, and get people thinking! Make your own posts on tumblr reminiscing about how great it was last year or how excited you are this year, and start warming up the crowd for us. After all, we don't just need writers- we need voters too, and together we can make this event just as successful as years past!

Mad thanks go to [personal profile] reikah  for talking me into hosting, and [personal profile] mikkeneko  for being a sounding board for my early ideas, and I hope to see you all on Friday the 1st!

Title: The End of the World and Other Embarrassments
Prompt: Wing!fic
Word Count: 20,000
Rating: PG
Warnings: poking fun at biblical events, some blood, nothing too graphic unless you count Seishirou singing as graphic violence. Also unbeta’d, OH NOES

Author's notes: Many thanks to my girlfriend who cheered me on while writing this! You could say that this fic suffered a little from being written during a busy time - you will not find well-researched biblical Babylon, for example, but a quite standard model of a villain fort called Doom Castle. It would be almost sad if I didn’t have as much fun writing this. I hope you find something to enjoy here, as well! :D
