Headcanon ficathon!
Well, it's been a while since the Olympics, so I thought I'd throw this here as a fun community event (don't worry, this isn't the summer challenge/contest, I'm still ironing that out).
Welcome to the Kurofai headcanon meme!
What is a headcanon? A headcanon, for those of you not familiar with the terminology, is "An idea, belief, or aspect of a story that is not mentioned in the media itself, but is accepted by either the reader themselves or the fandom in general. If it is confirmed by the author of the story, it becomes canon." (Thanks, urban dictionary!) Examples might include 'Fai has terrible metabolism, his feet get very cold' or 'one of Mokona's 108 techniques is Vibrate Mode' or anything else you feel is true but never confirmed in the text. Not all headcanons are worksafe.
How it works:
You leave a comment with one of your Kurofai headcanons. You can do so signed into a dreamwidth account or anonymously, for those of you without dreamwidth accounts/with embarrassing headcanons.
Someone else will write a short story based around your headcanon, and post it as a reply to you.
In short, it works a lot like
clampkink - but for headcanons rather than kinks!
Anonymous commenting is enabled, but you do not need to post headcanons/stories anonymously if you don't want to. I'm also going to go ahead and label this post NOT WORKSAFE preemptively, so please be careful browsing where your computer access is monitored! Stories can be as long and short as you like, and as SFW/NSFW as you feel like, or, if you prefer, you can fill with fanart instead - both are excellent. For our rules on threesomes or moresomes, check the comm rules in our profiles.
That's all the nitty-gritty out of the way - now let's go ahead and share some headcanons!

Flowers in Winter, Part 1 of ?
------------------------------------------
Once a year, during the summer, Ashura traveled to a country estate for what was supposed to be a month-long holiday. He always spent most of it working, so it was hard to call it anything but a change of scenery in reality. He claimed the air did him good, and Fai’s first summer in Celes he was forced to accompany Ashura on the retreat for its health benefits .
There were a lot of people worried about Fai’s health, too many of them and too often, he thought. His skin made him look anemic and he hardly ate. He probably was anemic. All the clucking women of the household seemed to believe it was a brilliant idea to take Fai away to the fortifying country air, so they rushed to make preparations. Fai was almost grateful for the extra bustle in the castle, because it made it easy to slink away, to ignored all of it and focus on his studies. Even after nearly a year in Celes, he was still feeling uncertain and misplaced, and the easiest remedy was retreat. Books. Magic. Ashura wanted him to become a mage, and he grasped on to that goal out of an overwhelming gratitude for having demands made on him. He’d already reached D Class and was quickly surpassing all his teachers. His desire to learn was half a need to make Ashura proud and half the first sparks of a rebellion in his heart. Something buried deep inside that told him he was worth not just something but a lot. If magic was his talent then he wanted become the best mage they had. He would show them. (Show what, and to whom, he couldn’t say, and it hurt too much to try.)
They could have used magic, he and Ashura, to arrive at the country estate in only moments, but they’d be days ahead of the servants and supplies, and the thought of airing the place out himself and having no food was less than appealing to either of them. So they added a grand carriage to the procession of wagons and horses and prepared to take the scenic route.
The carriage had only just started jostling down the cobblestone streets of Ruval before Ashura slid an arm around Fai and drew him into a tight hug.
“I’m not worried about your health, or mine,” he said, and there was a sparkle of laughter in his eyes. “The country estate is a days’ travel farther than any of the clucking biddies at court are willing to go, so it’s a whole month where I can work in peace and quiet. I thought you’d appreciate coming along.”
The guards and the kitchen staff were almost friends by that time, but overall the court in Ruval was overwhelming, the castle too big, the people too false and laughing. Fai liked the taste of fine food and the feeling of tailored clothing, and he even appreciated being petted at by pretty women sometimes. He was rapidly becoming spoiled. (All Ashura’s fault.) If not for that, he sometimes thought he’d run away. Take all his books and hide in a hollow tree in the forest and live rough.
He might have forgone the luxury and done it anyway. But he always remembers before he can act how much he’d miss Ashura.
With Ashura’s arm around him, he told himself he should pull away, show the dignity of a mage. He should keep his distance, because he is accursed. Everything he touches comes to ruin. Instead, he snuggled into Ashura’s side. Ashura was always warm. Fai sometimes woke from nightmares shivering and fearing that he would never be warm again in his life. He would sit in front of the banked fire in his room and cry and shiver, his teeth clacking together and his fingers numb no matter how close he scooted to the fire. Ashura always found him in the morning. He would sit down beside him and drape a robe over him and chafe Fai’s cold fingers in his big hands. He’d smile at him and talks about their plans for the day. He never asked about the nightmares because he knew Fai wouldn’t answer.
Ashura always smelled good. He must have kept sachets of dried flowers and herbs in his armoire, like the dried bundles tied with ribbon that the servants always put among Fai‘s clothes. Ashura’s smelled more musky and spicy and interesting, so perhaps he made his own. Fai had a book in his lap and he tried to read, but the rocking carriage and the arm around him lulled him to sleep. He slept on Ashura’s shoulder all the way to their first stop to water the horses outside the city.
------------------------------
The next day saw them driving up a narrow valley, following a road that Ashura told him would fork off in two different directions soon, one toward their country home for the next month and the other up the mountain into a pass that was an important trading route. “There’s a little town up there,” he said—but Fai has remembered, and sprung to attention.
“You saved them from the avalanche last winter,” Ashura reminded him unnecessarily. Fai had already stuck his head out of the curtains pinned over the window of the carriage. It was his first test as a mage. Ashura had worked the spell that sent him, but remained behind, wanting to see what Fai could do on his own first.
Summer days in Celes were always so beautiful ,the air full of good smells. There was still snow up on the mountains, but the valley they drove through was green and lush, and the carriage rocked violently in the furrows carved by other wheels in mud that had long since dried out. Fai nearly knocked his head when they went over a particularly large bump, so Ashura pulled him back in, smiling fondly.
“A little girl gave me a flower,” Fai said.
And smiled. She’d had such a pretty smile. Everyone was always telling him to smile back then, but that was the first time Fai had seen someone grin with such sincerity. It was the memory of her smile that he pulled out when he was trying to practice his own.
He’d gotten better at it, now. People didn’t chide him to smile all the time anymore. Sometimes he even did it just because he wanted to.
He’d been so happy to see that flower, too. It was proof, somehow, that something good had really happened to him, like this wasn’t only another curse waiting to be unveiled. Flowers in winter and girls with freckles on their cheeks—Celes must be a good place after all.
“What was her name?”
“I forgot to ask,” Fai whispered, his cheeks burning with embarrassment.
He had a strange relationship with names, and he knew it. He didn’t like the fact that somebody else got to pick them out for you, that you were just supposed to grow into this personality designed by a word that wasn’t your own. The name he’d given to himself, it was different from simply switching to his brother’s name, because he would never, never, ever be his brother. But somehow renaming himself helped him forget Yuui, and remember what he was now, and Fai was the most important part of what he was now. Ashura was the other important part of him, and he’d incorporated the word Fluorite, and made himself into something so terribly different from Yuui. Fai Fluorite had not yet decided what he was.
He often forgot to ask people their names, or failed to remember if he was told. He usually had a nickname for them in his head that meant a great deal more to him than the one they gave.
The little girl was Rabbit.
He didn’t know why, exactly. She just was.
“You’d like to see her again, wouldn’t you?” Ashura asked. His eyes got sharp and careful sometimes, looking at Fai. Because Fai wasn’t good at telling Ashura if he wanted something, or even if he needed it. He’d gone so long without anybody caring what he needed, and he was still too afraid that the dream of Celes would shatter to make the slightest misstep. But Ashura was good at guessing. “Do you think she’d like to see you?”
“I don’t know,” Fai mumbled, feeling the heat in his cheeks creep even further.
Ashura banged his fist on the top of the carriage, and it rolled to a stop. Fai huddled and buried his face in his knees to hide his embarrassment as Ashura began to issue instructions. Their carriage was taking the right fork up into the mountain pass, while the servants and supplies continued on to the estate. They were going to visit the village. Ashura said he needed to inspect the pass to try to ascertain whether they ought to shore it up to protect against further avalanches this winter.
It was inconvenient, but he was the king, and it seemed to be business of the realm. The driver of their carriage could hardly argue. The carriage started moving again, and Ashura settled back down beside Fai with a smile ready.
Fai could not look up. He was crying into his kneecaps.
“Are you all right?”
He was embarrassed that he hadn’t hidden his wants better. He was embarrassed that Ashura was willing to do this. But more than that, he was filled with a horrible shame that his wishes were so inconvenient, that he had any wishes at all, that Ashura must now delay his holiday on this miserable excuse just because Fai wanted to see the little girl. He was a shameful person.
He also cried because Ashura loved him, and he loved Ashura, and he was weeping just because he was happy about that. A warm hand fell on his shoulder, and he threw himself into Ashura’s embrace.
Re: Flowers in Winter, Part 2 of ?
There were beds free, though, since most of the traders liked to sleep with their wagons or their horses to ensure their security. Or so said the stable boy who was cheerfully unhitching their horses, to their carriage driver, while they gathered the things they needed for the night from their traveling bags. Fai was shocked at the implication that the residents of this village were dishonest, but Ashura assured him that the traders were only worried about the other traders—they weren’t all citizens of Celes, so who knew about them?
The innkeeper was more than necessarily delighted to accommodate them, getting himself into something of an overexcited state and causing him to snap at one of his serving girls who wasn’t moving with the proper amount of bustle for the king’s visit. Fai could tell Ashura was unhappy about that, but he didn’t say anything.
“How come you didn’t tell the innkeeper to be nicer to that girl?” Fai inquired, once they were established in their room and spreading out the clothes they’d don the next day.
“Well,” Ashura said thoughtfully. He paused what he was doing and turned to Fai, as he always did because he said it was important to give people your full attention when you were speaking. “It’s not my inn.”
“You’re the king, though.”
“That’s true. But I didn’t build these walls, or buy the hay for the horses. I don’t wake up before dawn to check the fires and start the bread rising. It’s the innkeeper’s business, and he’s the one who should say how it’s to be run. If his choice is to mistreat his employees, I think he’ll find out that his employees won’t stay. And I think he’ll find out that he won’t get business or money from decent folks. And he’ll find out that the king doesn’t like his way of doing business and told everybody he knows,” Ashura added with a sparkle in his eyes.
Fai smiled, a little bubble of some strange feeling he couldn’t name in his chest and stomach.
“That’s why you have to ask her, later when she brings dinner to us, if she’s happy working here.”
“Me?” Fai blurted in dismay.
“Of course,” Ashura grinned. “She’d hardly tell me the truth. But a darling young boy with a face like a saint and hair the colour of spun gold . . . you, I think she’ll like very much.”
Fai had no idea what to say to that, so he just hid his apparently saintly face behind a book.
“Now, shall we go for a walk around the village to stretch our legs?” Ashura asked.
Fai threw his book down onto the bed. “Yes!”
“Well, if you’re tired we could just rest a while.”
“I’m not tired, I’m not, I want to— oh.”
He still wasn’t always sure what teasing was all about, so sometimes he missed it. “Don’t we need an escort or something?”
Fai was never allowed to go anywhere in Ruval without an escort. He’d been told that being adopted by the king came with certain risks, and required men gifted in martial skills to trail after him. It seemed even more important for the king himself to be guarded.
Ashura gave him a rare look of naked pride. “I hardly think so. I’m more than capable of defending us against any threat, and I am in deep doubt that we’ll encounter one.”
Ashura was one of the most powerful and learned magicians in all of Celes. He said Fai had at least as much raw talent as he did, if not more, but Ashura had been studying much longer than Fai had. Of course it was silly to think some fool with a knife in his boot could lay a finger on a man like Ashura.
So they went out, with Ashura urging Fai to roam ahead as much as he liked while he strolled and received the many greetings and good wishes of the villagers. Fai chose to stay close to his side, though. He really didn’t want to get lost or have to talk to a bunch of strangers.
“Ahhh, I remember you, lad,” a matron said to him, smiling so that her eyes crinkled. “You saved us this past winter. I always hoped to see you again so we could thank you properly.”
There had been only a few minutes for him here before Ashura’s spell would take him back to Ruval, back to the castle, and he’d been entirely grateful to escape their enthusiasm. He’d only paused because of Rabbit.
“It was nothing,” Fai said softly.
“Nothing? It was a very great something to us!”
“I was thanked,” he insisted.
“Oh, yes, I remember. Little Lucia stopped you, didn’t she?”
Lucia must be her name. And instead of instantly rebelling, Fai found himself oddly happy. It seemed to fit her. He wanted to call her Rabbit, still. But Lucia was a nice name.
“Does she still live in the village?” Ashura asked politely, casually, as though it wasn’t the whole reason they’d come here. “I think Fai would like to say hello to her.”
“Lucy!” the matron called over her shoulder. “Lucia Shoemaker, you stop that this instant and come here!”
Their attention had been focused on the woman they were speaking to, but in the background a few children had been playing outside one of the houses. A young boy had started shrieking just as the woman raised her voice, and Fai zeroed in on the problem. The boy was being pelted with gobs of mud. The culprit immediately bounded over, mud all over her hands and dress, laughter written all over her face and her eyes nearly squeezed shut with the force of her smile.
“What?”
“This is our king, Ashura-ou.”
Rabbit’s eyes flew wide open and she hastily made a curtsy, going low and frantically trying to wipe the mud from her hands onto the back of her dress. “Your Highness,” she squeaked.
“The king has stopped in our village for the night while traveling. And you remember—”
“Wizard Fluorite!” the girl cried out happily.
“Hello,” Fai said, his smile genuine and full enough to make his face feel stretched. “I’m happy to see you again,” he said politely.
“Oh, me, too!” she said, and launched herself forward. Ashura was as startled as Fai, and made an abortive attempt to grab her. She threw her arms around Fai and gave him an unbridled hug. “You saved my house last year! Did you come back to see the new room we built for my baby sister?”
“Ah,” Fai said, startled. “I— if you want me to see it, I—”
“Come with me!” she said, and grabbed his hand, and dragged him away. Fai stumbled after her, marveling at how tight she was holding onto him. She was awfully strong. She was also leaving streaks of mud all over his clothes and on his hand. “My house is just this way.”
“I never got to see it before,” Fai said politely. “You’ll have to show me which part is the new addition.”
“Oh, don’t worry, you can tell,” she said, rolling her eyes. “My father built it himself and you can tell.”
Fai felt that bubbling sensation under his ribs again, and suddenly a giggle popped out of him. He was so startled that he clapped his hand over his mouth and stared at Lucia.
“Oh, how lovely!” she said. “Is that your very first laugh?”
He nodded.
“Wasn’t it your very first smile the last time you were here?”
“I think so. I wasn’t any good at it yet.”
“But you’ve gotten practice. Next, you’ll have to practice laughing, I guess. I could help! I think our village is good for you, Wizard Fluorite.”
“You can . . . You can call me Fai. If you want.”
“Ohhh, can I?” she asked in delight.
“You’re the reason I laughed, you know. I came back to see you again. I didn’t even know your name so I didn’t know how I was going to find you.”
“My mummy tells me I’m not hard to find,” Lucia said.
Fai let out a very brief giggle again. “I was calling you Rabbit.”
“Rabbit?” she wailed. “But that’s horrible. Don’t call me that.”
“I like it,” Fai said, suddenly feeling breathless. “It’s my special name for you.”
“If you have to have a special name,” she muttered grudgingly. “But you could have picked something prettier.”
“You’re not pretty, though!” Fai protested. “You’re just really cute, like a bunny, and you do that thing with your nose, so I—”
He was saying so much, saying much too much. His face flamed with embarrassment and he stopped talking. Lucia was shrieking that she did not do that thing with her nose, and he nearly ran back to Ashura to hide. But then suddenly she cut off her own rant to say,
“Oh, here’s my house!”
It was indeed rather obvious where the addition was. It leaned rather conspicuously.
“Mummy says it’s going to cave in on my baby sister’s head some night,” Lucia told him cheerfully.
Fai frowned, and walked closer. He inspected the foundation as best he could, and ran a hand along the joining wall. He had to step carefully to avoid crushing some posies growing in a little row under the window.
“I could fix it, if you want me to.”
“Oh, please,” Lucia said, giving an excited little hop. “It was so exciting to see you do magic before! And I don’t really want the house to fall on my sister, even if she does cry all night.”
Re: Flowers in Winter, Part 2 of ?
I personally don't mind seeing a lot of Ashu-papa. Because he's the best papa for Fai ever. So sweet of him to stop the whole entourage so Fai can find Lucia. ;____;
Bby Fai is so precious; and he really does still have a hard time believing his happiness and being loved. Oh bby, take it in now as much as you can...
I like how you explained that Fai isn't good with names, that he prefers using nicknames. And is it just me, or did you characterize Lucia like young Kurogane on purpose? I think I see what you're doing there. But ahhh she's so precious and adorable and I always wanted to read more about her because she is perfect as one of Fai's childhood friends. ;____;

Why are you so talented Faren? WHY???
Firstly, this line practically sums up Fai in a tidy little package:
"Ashura wanted him to become a mage, and he grasped on to that goal out of an overwhelming gratitude for having demands made on him."
I mean, holy balls batwoman. That IS FAI. The fact that he feels more comfortable when demands are being made on him. The fact that he's not sure how to walk without burdens. Not sure how to accept anything just because. He must always offer something in exchange. He doesn't know how to be FREE.
And the way you write Fai and Ashura, and the whole name thing. Oh god, the name thing. I love how you presented that. Such an important and beautiful thing to highlight.
Aside from all of the many persistent feels that are currently taking up residence on my couch (they are fluffy, and wet like my tears) I also love the humor in this piece. And the children… one of your special talents is being able to write teh' children.
Okay. Stopping now, as I am flail-rambling.
Still… BBS!

And you got me, I loved her the moment she appeared. ahjlksdhfalksdfj *incoherent with adoring dolphin noises* *loves all over that little girl*
This is the absolutely best story I have ever read about little Fai. No questions, ever. JUST READING THIS IS MAKING ME RIDICULOUSLY HAPPY! :DDD
You're the bestest. Ever. *heaps all the love on you*

I only just realized THIS MORNING that you had filled the prompt, HOW DID THIS HAPPEN - this is utterly gorgeous, and you're just working so, SO well with Fai's POV:
"He was embarrassed (...) that he had any wishes at all, that Ashura must now delay his holiday on this miserable excuse just because Fai wanted to see the little girl. He was a shameful person. // He also cried because Ashura loved him, and he loved Ashura, and he was weeping just because he was happy about that."
These lines (and any above) feel so very authentic... I feel that one of your greatest talents when it comes to writing has always been that you make me, as a reader, feel so strongly for the protagonist that I can barely peel my own and baby!Fai's feelings apart in this - this is heart-wrenching and -warming at the same time.
Also, I love to watch him grow up like this - in the manga, we seen him as an elementary student and then as an adult - I've always missed the years in between which mark the transition between these two stages. So much is happening as he is growing up. Also, while it hurts to see him work through issues of trust and self-worth as an adult, the concept grows much deeper the moment we get to know even more about his process of growing up.
...okay, enough of me blabbing - what I meant to say is that I'm LOVING this, and it's gorgeous, and, oh my god, FAREN, HOW ARE YOU SO AMAZING! *A* *A* *A*
*showers you with love and adoration*
