Spring 2013 Olympics news & newchapter of fic!

I feel kind of guilty posting again so soon, especially with the same fic, but I actually have some news regarding the Kurofai Olympics! We've pretty much decided we've gotten all the respondents we were gonna get to our poll, so I'm pleased to announce that official sign-ups for the kurofai comm's 2013 Spring Olympics, 'Technobabble vs Handwavey Magic' (or the 8,000 alternative names for the same general concept given in that post) will be going up from the 8th-13th of February. This encompasses a weekend. The theme list will be posted from the 14th of February, and hopefully both teams will be decided and available to begin writing from February 17th. Fic posting will begin on March 10th! If you are interested in signing up but will not have access to the internet during our official signups, please send me a PM or email (kaltia at gmail.com) letting me know which team you'd like to be on & I'll sign you up.

This is your last chance before signups to clear up any confusion you may have about the olympics! Hit me with your questions and I will do that thing I do where I answer you in interpretive dance and it's all really really awkward cos you can't actually see my dance through your internet connection.

Firstly, unfinished fic can be posted to the olympics. It's just likely to be marked down by unsatisfied readers, leading to a lower team score, which negatively impacts your team's performance. For that reason, I suggest people refrain from writing War & Peace for their Olympics entry - if in doubt, keep it short & play to your strengths (porn, fluff, angst etc). If you are going to write a longer story, then:

a) you're brave
b) you're foolish
c) you better airtight that sucker's plot and plow through it like it's nano month!

If you really really feel you cannot finish your fic by your posting day, you should contact me. I'll tap your team's pinch-hitter (your back-up, standby, writer) and push your theme's day to the back of the contest schedule to give your pinch-hitter time to work. Failure to post anything at all or to let me know I need to holler at your back-up means your team receives zero for that day's theme, which can really hammer your team's point score TO THE GROUND, BABY.

Also, if you post late, then you get half scores. That is, if your fic is due in March 12th and you post it March 14th, and you would have naturally received an average of 9 out of 10, we'll downgrade you to 4.5. It's not called an olympics because it's not a competition!

oh my god kyra it is such a magical place! :3 umm probably more so until we had to do battle with the adder on the village green! it cornered me and i ended up with mild nausea for like an hour omfg ;_;

Yup! Once the deadline's over, and we've shuffled things around so that we have equal numbers on each time + stand-bys, we'll be posting the themes.

Is there a word limit / goal?

If you end up writing like, a 10k+ word fic OTL ... because you're dumb like that... (and by you, I mean me, yoshikochan)... and you've written all these chapters but not the end, is it too late once the deadline comes around?

no word limit! We had two people write forty thousand words last time. It's better to finish your fic if you can, though, and that goes for a 5,000 word fic or a 50,000 word fic; incomplete fics will get lower marks.

Is there a minimum word count?

We usually say 'about 1,000 words,' but that's mostly because it's very very hard for readers to get a feel for, and therefore vote on, shorter stories. Most people will end up putting out a fic between 2500 to 10,000 words (although last time was one of the wordier olympics - we had a bunch of stories clocking in around 12k, one at 20k and two at more than 40k, because we're apparently all ninja typists.)

yeah, you definitely don't have to write a novel. Write as much as it takes for your individual story, enough for you to get across your chosen theme!

(You may also remember that we had to extend the voting period last olympics because the fics were so long; our readers couldn't get through them all in the week or two we originally gave them. Having a fic that's too long is definitely not always a good thing!)

I could get all thoughtful and political...

and say while I am a fervent supporter of gay marriage (duh, been dreaming about my wedding to the gf and getting into conniptions over where we're gonna honeymoon for YEARS now) I can sorta see why she didn't I mean, it's an issue over here, but since religion isn't as ingrained in our politics as it is in other countries, most de facto gay couples (like yours truly) have pretty much the same rights as de facto straight couples, and the stuff we don't have is mostly financial as opposed to basic need for safety and not being harrassed by bible-thumpers and such in the streets. And we have bigger fish to fry as well, e.g. boatpeople. So while I don't agree with it, and think that if she showed off that steel spine of hers which lurks somewhere beneath the ranga hair and actually said fuck it, gay marriage, do what you want, she'd earn like 1000% of the gay vote overnight, I sorta see where she's coming from even if I don't like it. At least she gave her party a conscience vote because while she personally doesn't support it, she acknowledges that her personal opinions should not dictate party line, and gave everyone the choice to vote it into their policies, which it now is, and that's pretty fucking decent of her. Unlike Abbott, aka Mad Monk, whose sister is gay and he still won't give his party a conscience vote at ALL, the fucker.
